The Delfino finally gets itself into the Launchpad family. The Delfino is a sibling of the C2000 series of controllers that aims towards motor control, inverters and lighting systems. They excel in high speed closed loop control, sensing and not to mention the awesome real time debugging feature which has saved me a ton of hair pulling.


The Controller

The TMS320F28377S controller by itself is a beast. The ‘S’ at the end of the part number signifies a single core Delfino. It comes in a dual core variant too and is suffixed by a ‘D’ at the end. This guy is top of the line, just below the dual core series part.

This baby packs in a 200Mhz single core, 7 16-bit ADCs, 164Kb RAM and 1MByte flash – grunt. Yes, 1 MB to store your program code. Well, not to forget the 15 enhanced PWM channels which is the widely used module in most projects.


The Launchpad

The F28377S Launchpad comes with dual 40-pin BoosterPack connectors to expand on your design and retails for $29 at the TI EStore. It can be powered separately from the BoosterPack headers if electrical isolation is needed. It comes with an XDS100v2 debugger, a notch lower than the v3, which is only required if users need  IEEE 1149.7 support. The board also comes with a CAN transciever SN65HVD234D,  with signaling rates up to 1 Mbps.

The LAUNCHXL-F28377S includes a pre-programmed TMS320F28377S device. When the LaunchPad is connected via USB, the demo starts with an LED flash sequence. After a few seconds the device switches into an ADC sample mode. Each second the ADC is sampled and the sample data is relayed to you. If the sample is above mid-scale (2048), the red LED will light. However, if the sample is below mid-scale the blue LED will light. In addition to the LED display, sample information is also displayed on your PC through the USB/UART connection.
